We transform some tools into necessities in order to make our lives easier and happier and to fulfill our needs.
Some tools occasionally facilitate our activities and lives in the end. A search engine is that kind of a tool. Before we had search engines, to dig some information out, we had to look for books that had the kind of information we required. Then, it was necessary to cast an eye over the books and they were our primary source of information. Now, we are just googling to find almost any piece of information we need. Yes, Google is not just a search engine, but also a verb and googling is an ordinary action for us.
Best search results and Google's secret algorithm
Of course, many have documented the reasons for Google's success and most of us view it with admiration. However, the main indicator of its success is our Google searches, which provide the most relevant and logical searches. We are talking about a search engine which measures our behavior in more than 50 ways and anticipates our next search entries and needs better than any other search engine. Its secret algorithm, without any doubt, gives us the best results. Its use is very simple and you can also easily find the best search results out of all search engines. Even if Google's competitors have similar features, Google is doing the job better and in the most qualified way. That's why it is keeping the throne of search engines.
Investment in technology and R&D
Google is making hundreds of millions of dollars of investment in technology and R&D projects each year. It is making more investments than its rivals and because of this, it provides more products to people than any other tech company.
Google is providing all digital elements we need and some of its popular products areGmail,Google maps, Chromebook, Glass and Nexus. If we think of all Google's products, we can see that it's not just a search engine but much more. It even has a project to provide the Internet to everyone in the world called “Projectloon.” The project uses high-altitude balloons in the stratosphere to create a high-speed wireless network. Another amazing project of Google, right? We should admit that Google's products are much better than even the products we pay for. This is another indicator of Google's success, I believe. So, why is Google doing all this? Is it a large charity or there is another explanation for it all? How is Google doing all these things and why?
Most of us know that Google is the largest-scale advertising company in the world and makes 97 percent of its profits from online advertising. It has many ways of making money online, but the basis of its income is AdWords. Google receives advertisements from all of the world's advertisers and spreads them all over the web. AdWords is, so to speak, working like a voltron with Google's AdSense, a program that provides publishers with automatic text, image, video, or interactive media advertisements tailored to site content and audience. Adwords gets the advertisements and allocates them to AdSense users for publishing all over the web. Google's most successful project is AdWords and it raises most of Google's revenue. Google is not only a search engine, but also the most successful digital brand that earns a huge amount of money from its service in the market.
Teamwork spirit and having the best
What is the thing that Google owe all its success to? Could it be the brilliant minds ofLarry Page and Sergey Brin? Of course, they both deserve admiration and applause, but what makes the Google we know today is teamwork spirit and its employees, who are the best at what they do. Brilliant people with different minds and personalities are working in harmony at Google and we can say that the real success of Google is to gather all these people and make them work with full efficiency. If you have succeeded to become involved in the Google team, you have become a Googler, part of the “Best Ones Family.” When you ask about what working at Google is like, you hear almost the same thing from all googlers: “We are good at brainstorming and we have harmony."
Best digital brand and most common verb: Google
As we have previously said, Google is not just the best digital brand anymore, but a verb in dictionaries. The word “Google” tells us a success story. It is not just an outcome of a successful marketing, but an indicator that shows what the outcome will be if you give the work to the qualified people. I strongly advise to those who want to become leader of their own markets or entrepreneurs to analyze the success story of Google. If it's necessary to look at the mistakes people have made and take lessons, then I believe it's also necessary to analyze the success stories for being better at what we are doing. For the success you are seeking, you can begin with Google's success story.
March was a good month for Google. Its market capitalization breached a record high $260 billion. Since its IPO in 2004, its shares have soared over 900%. The company’s success stems from its continuous innovation and it extraordinary management practices. Laszlo Bock, Senior Vice President of Google’s People Operations, talked to me on Thursday on the sidelines of The Economist’s Innovation Forum at UC Berkeley about Google’s innovation secrets.
Google has been keeping the pipeline of innovation going by tapping its employees and letting ideas percolate up, Bock said.
The company has a relatively small group of employees — more than 30,000 workers (excluding 20,000 it gained when acquiringMotorola Mobility). Google is smaller thanExxon Mobil (76,900 employees) and Apple (72,800). It is trying to create an arena where people can be brought together in surprising ways to innovate.
“We try to have as many channels for expression as we can, recognizing that different people, and different ideas, will percolate up in different ways,” Bock said.
The channels include:
Google Cafés, which are designed to encourage interactions between employees within and across teams, and to spark conversation about work as well as play.
Direct emails to any of the company’s leaders.
Google Moderator, an innovation management tool designed by Google’s engineers. The simple idea behind it is that when people have tech talks or company-wide meetings, it lets anyone ask a question and then people can vote up the questions that they’d like answered. Through Moderator, people can discover existing ideas, questions or suggestions, vote for ideas, questions or suggestions and see the aggregate votes to date, create a new series asking for ideas organized by topic, event or meeting. Google Moderator itself is one of Google’s infamous “20 percent” projects. By allowing its engineers to spend 20% of their work week on projects that interest them, Google is able to tap into the many talents of its employees.
